J. Same Jacket, New Wearer

Think of a piece you wore at twenty and can still wear at fifty. Not because it still fits, but because it never tried to be current in the first place.

That kind of clothing exists, and this year it returns as J. Press Fall/Winter 2026.

J. Press opened in 1902 in New Haven, Connecticut. Jacobi Press, a Latvian immigrant tailor, set up shop next to the Yale campus. His customers were students, and what he cut for them was a jacket with no darts, no shoulder padding, three buttons down the front: the sack. A New York store followed in 1912, then Cambridge in 1932, beside Harvard, where it stayed for the next 86 years. The oxford button-down, the Shaggy Dog shetland and the sack jacket became a shared language for generation after generation of American students.

The part fewer people know: in 1974 J. Press became the first American brand licensed in Japan, and in 1986 Onward Kashiyama bought the company outright. Today the Japanese line runs several times the size of the American one. What we carry at Onion is Ivy seen through Japanese eyes: the same patterns, better cloth, proportions revisited every season.

The first FW26 drop asks one question. What proportion should an old silhouette have in 2026? The answer sits in the words Baggy Fit, which open the name of every blazer and shirt here. Natural shoulder, no waist suppression, just cut a little wider, with room for a sweater underneath and no loss of manners. The trousers stay Piped Stem, the house line since the beginning: red piping at the waistband, a back cinch, a long straight leg.

Ivy is not a silhouette. It is an agreement about how long a garment should stay with you. That is the heart of this collection.

124 years, two wars, a hundred trends and an ownership change across an ocean, and the jacket still has three buttons. Some things do not need to prove themselves again every season.
