The Wallabee Lives On: A Silhouette That Refuses to Become Just a Classic
Clarks was founded in 1825 in Somerset, England. It has been making shoes ever since, but only one of them became a cultural artifact. In 1968, Lance Clark looked at a moccasin called "Grasshopper" from the German brand Sioux and decided to make something similar, but more Clarks. He used English suede, a crepe sole that compressed underfoot, and a foot-shaped last that felt unlike anything else on the market. He called it the Wallabee.
The shoe reached America in 1971. On April 26, a shipment of 4,176 pairs arrived at JFK. US customs officials, confronted with crates of unfamiliar footwear, briefly considered calling animal control. They thought the boxes might contain live wallabies. The misunderstanding became news. The news became legend. From that moment the Wallabee belonged to culture as much as to commerce: Wu-Tang members wore them through the 1990s, Kingston's dancehall scene claimed them as their own, and somewhere along the way the shoe became impossible to categorize.
The suede that goes into a Wallabee is not ordinary suede. Clarks runs the hide through a process developed specifically for this shoe: rehydration, sanding, shaving, dyeing, buffing, and brushing, until the surface achieves the particular softness that distinguishes English suede from anything else. It is a process that takes time, and it shows.
SS26 takes the silhouette in two clear directions. The Wallabee GTX inserts a GORE-TEX membrane beneath the classic suede upper, delivering weather resistance without sacrificing the soft, lived-in character the shoe is known for. The Walla Yukoner brings the same moccasin construction into leather, offering a more textured, durable surface suited to year-round wear. Both make the same argument: the Wallabee shape from 1968 is not broken. It never needed fixing. It just needed options.
