The Jacket the USAF Built Before the World Knew It Wanted One
Alpha Industries was founded in 1959 on government contracts, manufacturing flight gear for the U.S. military. In 1963, the company won the Department of Defense contract for the MA-1 Flight Jacket. It became the first military bomber jacket in history to cross into civilian fashion. Not because it was designed for that purpose, but because it was built well enough to outlast the context it was made for.
The MA-1 is cut from mid-weight flight nylon with water-resistant properties, engineered for cockpit mobility. The interior lining is Emergency Orange, originally specified to improve aerial visibility of downed pilots. That functional choice became the brand's most recognizable detail. For SS26, Alpha Industries brings back the MA-1 in both Sage and Black, alongside the CWU 45/P, another USAF and Navy-issued flight jacket built on the same spec-driven logic.

The NASA MA-1 Gen II in Replica Blue rounds out the SS26 lineup with newly commissioned space-program patches, extending a collaboration that has been part of Alpha's identity for decades. All five jackets carry the same architecture: flight nylon shell, ribbed cuffs and waist, that orange lining inside. The SS26 collection at Onion offers nothing reinterpreted. That is the entire point.
