## Every tool needs somewhere to live

Picture someone crouched in a garden at seven in the morning. Secateurs in one hand, twine in a pocket, seed packets somewhere, gloves half tucked away. If the clothes have nowhere to put any of it, everything ends up in the dirt.

Takashi Takagi ran into that every day. The old military surplus and American workwear he gardened in held up fine, but nobody had designed it for a person growing things. That gap is where Sassafras began, and Fall/Winter 2026 is still working the same question.

Sassafras was founded in Kyoto in 2004. Takagi built it around a fictional character, Steve Gossard, a Californian gardener who makes his own clothes because nothing on the market does the job properly. The name comes from a North American tree. The garments borrow their bones from vintage military and Americana workwear, then get rebuilt around what a gardener actually carries. Two decades on, there is still no official website, no Instagram, no Facebook, and no advertising campaign.

Fall/Winter 2026 runs under the theme **Leaf & Weeds**. The Overgrown line, in the collection since 2021, carries most of the season through ripstop nylon and cotton military satin. Beside it sits a heavier denim story: 14oz rigid and 13.5oz slub, both unwashed. And a new lapel jacket, the G.D.U. Leaf Jacket, short for Garden Dress Uniform, which is Takagi quietly turning Battle Dress Uniform into something you would wear to dig in.

Good clothes do not explain themselves. They just last long enough that the person wearing them does it for you.
